Centertown, located at the intersection of Main and Bridge Streets, is the newest addition to the Bedford Historic District, even though the scene is straight out of the turn of the century. Built primarily after the devastating fire of 1884, new structures detailed in the Italianate style were constructed with stylish cast iron shop fronts resembling those in uptown Richmond. In keeping with the ornate exteriors, many of the buildings still have pressed-tin ceilings, glass block windows and original cage elevators. Other impressive buildings from this period, the Masonic Hall and Bedford City/County Museum were built in the Romanesque Revival style.
