Built in 1853, L.A. Shumaker, a regional master builder, was paid $10,000 to design and erect the Pittsylvania County Courthouse building. The courthouse has been elegantly restored, including the elaborate plasterwork that embellishes the interior of the structure. Records held in the clerk's office go back to 1747.
