The Visitor Center is a 100 year old Roanoke Train Station that was relocated to the Staunton River Battlefield State Park. It opened in 2002 as the Roanoke Visitor Center to house an archaeological exhibit of Native American artifacts excavated from the park by the Longwood University Archaeological Field School. Investigation of the Late-Woodland American Indians at the Park is a joint effort by the Longwood University Archeology Field School, the Virginia Division of Parks and the Archaeological Society of Virginia. The investigation at the site has yielded information on daily life along the banks of the Staunton River from 1000 to 1450 A.D.
