As the Tuscarora War waged in nearby North Carolina in 1713, Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood ordered the building of a fort to protect the English families settled in now Greensville, Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties and the friendly Native American tribes which lived in the area. That fort, Christanna, encompassing four square miles bisected by the Meherrin River, was home to a school that taught Christianity and English to all the children, including the Native Americans. It has been designated one of the sites on the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail for this innovative approach to educating Native Americans. Excavations have occurred at the site for more than 200 years.
