Imagine seeing a deer quietly grazing; or a flock of birds stopped for a rest. Or, marvel at any one of a number of other wild creatures that populate the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests surrounding the Appalachian Trail. Opened as a continuous trail in 1937, a part of this famous 2,174 mile footpath that stretches from Maine to Georgia passes parallel to the Blue Ridge Parkway for some distance in Bedford County, Virginia. From there, the trail leaves the Parkway and travels west across the Great Valley of the Appalachians, to the Allegheny Plateau. Enjoy a short walk, a long hike or a comfortable stroll.
