Founded in 1777, Chatham has a variety of historic architecture, with most of its distinguished buildings dating from the 19th century. The original court house in the center of town dates from 1853, The Clerk’s office, built in 1813, was restored to its original shape and size in 1986. Mansfield, Chatham’s oldest residence was Richard Farthing’s home in 1777 when the county seat of Pittsylvania County was established at Chatham. This historic town also boasts two private schools, Chatham Hall and the Hargrave Academy.
