Driving Tours Downtown Historic District Tour

Prior to the Civil War, Danville’s principle commercial center developed along Main Street. As the city emerged as the dominant tobacco market in the 1870s and 1880s, construction spread out to the waterfront, where prosperous tobacco and textile manufacturers built large factories. After a period of decelerating commerce, the city initiated the historic district in 1993. Since becoming a Virginia Main Street Community in 2000, more than 30 buildings in Danville’s downtown historic district have been rehabilitated, enhanced by the restoration of the railroad depot and core commercial buildings.
