Built by Thomas Jefferson’s master builder Dabney Cosby, who worked with Jefferson on the construction of the University of Virginia core campus, the Halifax County Courthouse was completed in 1839. Occupying the location that has been used for court purposes since 1803, the Courthouse holds hundreds of thousands of documents relating to the residents of Halifax County, going back to 1752 when Halifax County was separated from Lunenberg County.
