Built in 1838, this historic home named Avenel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Avenel was the centerpiece of a 200-acre plantation which was the focal point of social, cultural and political life of Bedford for over 150 years. It has played host to many distinguished visitors including General Robert E. Lee and Edgar Allen Poe. The unique and original architectural features of the house make it one of the region’s treasures. A restoration of the property is currently underway. All tours are currently by appointment.
