Located in a former African American School at 3011 Mountain Road in Halifax, Virginia, the L. E. Coleman African American Museum is dedicated to educating visitors about the art, history and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on Halifax County, so they may drive strength and perspective from the past and find purpose for the future. After three years of effort, the Museum was dedicated in October, 2005. Old photographs, paintings and handmade quilts are featured alongside the art of world-renowned sculptor, Donald Brown. Brown, the creator of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Awards, is also the founder of TAOS, The Art of Success, designed to empower students and members of the general public, mentally, physically, spiritually and financially.
