Master builders William Howard and Dabney Cosby, Sr. who worked for Thomas Jefferson, also built the Lunenburg County Court House in 1827. In addition, they oversaw the building of the nearby Halifax County Court House and jail. Mr. Howard also built the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in 1838.
