Danville served as the location to which the massive number of Union prisoners captured in the Battle of Manassas and following battles and initially housed in Richmond, were shipped to in order to relieve Richmond of having to feed these additional occupants during the last days of the Civil War. Finding themselves with a considerable number of Federal prisoners who died under these conditions, the National Cemetery was established in 1866 to hold the Union soldiers who died of disease and wounds while being held as prisoners of war in Danville.
