It was in the old courthouse at New London that Patrick Henry delivered the second most famous of his speeches. On December 1, 1795, concerned citizens in the region responded to Thomas Jefferson’s vision to education masses of people, by requesting the General Assembly of Virginia to “incorporate trustees to an academy in the vicinity of New London, a city that was at the time a robust trading center. The original square frame building that housed the Academy was replaced by a brick structure in 1837. Today, the school, which has operated continuously since 1795, is an operating unit of the Bedford County Schools. A Museum on site illustrates the school’s history.
