South Boston

Younger than its city neighbors, South Boston began as a railroad depot in 1854, yet ultimately grew into the country's second largest bright leaf tobacco market US by the beginning of the 20th century. The arrival of the railroad propelled the tiny original community into the “South Boston Depot,” the connection between eastern US ports and the rich agricultural region that surrounds the community. City leaders have made productive use of former tobacco buildings. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Prizery is now a state-of-the-art theater. Next door, the Export Leaf Tobacco Building has been transformed into the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. High-style commercial buildings in the main commercial district are once again occupied by shops, restaurants and offices. As you take the walking tour, be sure to look up at the ornate Victorian detailing that crowns many of the building facades. Click here for local map.
