Fort Hill Trailhttp://www.state.va.us/dcr/p arks/srbbsp.htm Civil War Earthworks, stout defensive fortifications built from dirt, allowed soldiers to hunker down in the adjacent trenches. Earth from the excavation was heaped around it until it was high enough to protect the defenders from enemy view and thick enough to intercept enemy fire. The Staunton River Battlefield State Park features an extensive set of earthworks, ranked among "the most well preserved" earthworks in the State of Virginia. They are included on the National Register of Historic Places. Click here for a general map. Click here for a specific map. Directions: |
