700 Bruce Street Carved out of a handsome 19th century tobacco warehouse; the most interesting and handsome of the industrial buildings in downtown South Boston, the Prizery bills itself as a community, fine arts and welcome center. In addition to it's 425-seat theater complete with Italianate tower, performances of every kind, the prizery houses exhibits highlighting Halifax County’s tobacco and river transportation heritage. One such exhibit, “The Crossing of the Dan,” traces the route of Lord Cornwallis in 1781 as he led British troops from Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, to the Dan River in Virginia, pursuing General Nathaniel Greene and the colonists. The name of the building comes from the process of tobacco being pressed - or "prized" - into hogsheads for shipment. Directions: General Location Specific Location |
