One of Boydton’s oldest buildings originally located on Washington Street, the much moved Washington Tavern originally served as the mercantile establishment of James Bruce, America’s first chain store owner. After that, the building became part of the Exchange Hotel located between Jefferson and Decatur Streets. In the 1850’s it was transformed into the office of the stagecoach line to Petersburg and now resides behind the United Methodist Church, where it serves as the Parish Hall.
