After returning from the Civil War, Confederate veteran James Anderson completed construction of a water-powered grist mill on Tomahawk Creek in 1888. His son Otey took over the operation in 1908, adding a concrete dam and steel waterwheel, along with French burr millstones which greatly improved the efficiency of the mill. A cousin bought the mill in 1975, continuing operations until 1988, when he planted a vineyard. Today, the restored mill is the centerpiece of the Tomahawk Mill Winery.
