It’s been over 50 years since the first motor speedway races in Southern
Virginia evolved from dirt track stock car races into NASCAR sanctioned
facilities through Virginia’s Racing Region. The Martinsville Speedway
has grown from a red dirt oval with seating 750 people to a 6,000 seat
track and now features 86,000 seats to host the Nextel Cup twice a year.
After 44 years of operation, the South Boston Speedway now hosts the
NASCAR Grand National events as well as Late Model Stock Car races. The
Oak Level Speedway is still a dirt track where many NASCAR drivers have
learned the excitement of racing specialized race cars. The Virginia
International Speedway, reopened in 2000 is considered by Roger Penske
and Walt Hansgen to be the toughest road course in America. Enjoy all
these and more in Virginia’s Racing Region.
