| Wilson-Kautz Raid |
|
Begun on June 22, 1864, 5,000 Union cavalry troops led by Brigadier General August V. Kautz and Brigadier General James H. Wilson moved through Southern Virginia, tearing up 60 miles of railroad track, and burning two trains and several railroad stations. Their goal was to sever all railroad traffic through the region to prevent supplies from reaching Confederate troops entrenched at Petersburg, south of Richmond. Along with Burkeville Junction, the junction of the South Side Railroad and the Richmond & Danville Railroad, destroying the Staunton River Bridge was a major goal of the raiders, to eliminate railroad passage over the Staunton River. Now a Virginia Civil War Trails route with 26 stops, the route of the Raid, during which 492 old men and young boys aided Confederate Troops in the successful defense of the Staunton River Bridge, can be followed throughout Southern Virginia.
