Driving Vacations Presents:
The Real America: Southern Virginia on the Move |
The Best of Halifax
3 Days/2 NightsA visit to Halifax County takes you back to the very founding of
America. Surveyed by the William Byrd II of First Family of
Virginia fame in 1728, the actual county was formed in 1752. At
one time, it stretched all the way from its current eastern
boundary to the Blue Ridge mountains. The town of Halifax has
been a center of power since the early 1770s.
Much younger than its neighbors, South Boston began as a
railroad depot in 1854, yet ultimately grew into the second
largest bright leaf tobacco market in the US by the beginning of
the 20th century. The arrival of the railroad propelled the tiny
community, the “South Boston Depot,” into the connection between
eastern US ports and the rich agricultural region that surrounds
it. Until a few years ago, tobacco was king.
Within a dramatically changing economy, city leaders have made
productive use of former tobacco buildings. The incredibly well
restored R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Prizery is now a state of
the art theater, community center, visitors center and more.
Next door, the Export Leaf Tobacco Building was transformed into
the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. High-style
commercial buildings in the main commercial district are once
again occupied by shops, restaurants and offices. As you take
the walking tour, be sure to look up at the ornate Victorian
detailing that crowns many of the building facades.
After enjoying these two great historic towns you can meander
the scenic roads of Halifax County where life may not appear to
have changed significantly in the past century. It’s the best of
both worlds. |
