Day Three
As you leave the area today, we suggest an
early morning visit to the Turkeycock Mountain Wildlife Management Area
on your way to visit the R. J. Reynolds Estate in Franklin
County. It will increase the chances of seeing wildlife at Turkeycock.
Elevations in the primarily forested area range from 1,100 to over 1,700
feet. A number of small streams drain into Scout Pond.
The restored 1843 home at the Reynolds estate was the birthplace of
Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder of the highly successful R. J. Reynolds
Tobacco Company. The descendants of his parents, Hardin and Nancy
Reynolds, have brought together many of the heirlooms that originally
furnished the house to return the property to its pre-Civil War
antebellum appearance when the family was in residence. Possessions tell
the story of the life of a 19th century farmer, who was also a
successful tobacco grower and manufacturer. Another son, Richard Samuel,
was the founder of the Reynolds Metal Company in Richmond, Virginia.
From there, we wish you a safe and pleasant journey home. |
